Biography Of Jean Mensah

Jean Adukwei Mensah is a lawyer and the chairperson of the Ghana Electoral Commission (EC).

She assumed offìce in 2008 after Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo was sworn in as the President of Ghana.

Before taking up this role, Jean Mensah spent an 18-year career at the Institute of Economic Affairs rising to the position of executive director and playing a pivotal role in strengthening Ghana’s democratic rule and promoting strong institutions.

Jean Mensah took over from the then EC chairperson Charlotte Osei on 23 July 2018.

According to Information gathered by Ghanabrief.com, Jean Mensah had he basic education in Accra Ridge Church School.

Afterwards, she had her secondary education at St. Mary’s Senior High School, a popular girls school located at Korle-Gono in Accra.

After SHS, she gained admission into the University of Ghana where she studied Law and got a degree from the Faculty of Law in 1993. Two years after, she was called to the bar.

For two decades, Jean Mensah has been a leading force in policy research and advocacy. She also been involved in the development of policies such as the Presidential Transaction Act of 2012, the Revised 1992 constitution of Ghana (draft), the Political parties Funding Bill and Revised Political Parties Bill.

Her specialization has been developing and implementing policy alternatives that reflect international best practices but also tailored to Ghana’s needs.

Being the chairperson of the Electoral Commission was her first ever significant public sector appointment.

Before working at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Mrs. Jean Mensah had worked at the Amarkai Amarteifio Chambers from 1995 to 1997 and BJ Da Rocha Chambers as a junior lawyer in 1998.
