Biography Of Sophia Akuffo

Sophia Akuffo was the Chief of Justice of Ghana from 2017 to December 2019.
Before taking up this role, she had already been given the role as a judge at the Supreme Court of Ghana in the late 1990s.

She was appointed by the current President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo on 19 June 2017.
Mrs. Sophia Akuffo took over from the then Chief Justice Theodore Georgiana Wood.

Sophia Akuffo was born on 20 December 1949. This means she is 71 years old as we speak. She was born in Akuapem-Akropong in the country Eastern region of Ghana.
As a daughter of the Presbyterian Minister, she attended Wesley Girls Senior High School in Cape Coast.

After senior high school, she went to the University of Ghana, Legon where she obtained a Bachelor of Law degree. She furthered again at the Ghana School of Law where she qualified as a Barrister.
According to Information gathered by Ghanabrief.com, Sophia Akuffo trained as a lawyer under the current President.

She has a Master’s degree in Law from the Harvard University in the United States of America (USA).
On 11 May 2017, Sophia was nominated as the highest ranking judge of the Supreme Court of Ghana by Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, subject to approval by the parliament.

The last judgement Sophia Akuffo was involved in was on 18 December 2019 when the Supreme Court passed a unanimous ruling that courts could sit at weekends and on bank holidays to deal with urgent legal cases.
